Deputy US Marshal convicted of sexual assault hoax

This is a fun case that reads like a great episode of Law & Order: SVU. A corrupt badge, craigslist rape hoaxes, a woman who is (probably) innocent getting sent to jail because the state is incompetent. It also has my favorite thing of all: OpSec fails so glaringly obvious that even an amateur like yours truly can point them out. Let’s get started…

Convicted Of

Conspiracy, Cyberstalking, Perjury, and Obstruction

Overview

Once upon a time deputy US Marshal Ian R. Diaz met a girl named Jane Doe (no, not really. Her privacy is being respected here.) They fell in love and both went in on a condo together. Just like the US’s crumbling infrastructure, their love didn’t last. The stage is set for deceit and douchebaggery, with a stake in a condo on the line.

Mr. Diaz appears to have conspired with an unnamed co-conspirator (UCC from here on out) whom he had married at one point. The motivation seems centered around possession of the condo that Diaz and Jane Doe had purchased together.

The initial phase of Diaz’s plan to rid himself of Jane Doe was to create a myriad of fake harrassments and threats against UCC online. Diaz was able to use his intimate knowledge of Jane Doe’s online life to creating convincing impersonations of her, including techniques like using her known online aliases. Things escalate when Diaz and UCC create Craigslist personal postings looking for men to participate in a rape fantasy with UCC. Apparently multiple men were brought in to participate, and after one such incident Diaz and UCC called 911 and reported the incident as if she had been authentically raped. At this point the two claimed that Jane Doe had been responsible for the post that had lead to the “assault.”

Turns out Diaz had authorized the rape fantasy Craigslist postings with his personal phone number. That made it pretty hard for him to blame it on Jane Doe in the long run.

tl;dr

The GOOD: Diaz conspired with UCC to cuck himself on craigslist and in the long run his plan failed anyway. This isn’t good OpSec but it’s hilarious for us!

The BAD: A (most likely) innocent woman went to jail for 88 days when there was basically no evidence that she was guilty. Turns out you can have all the OpSec in the world and you might still get locked up due to sheer incompetence!

The UGLY: If hell is real then surely the deepest circle awaits Diaz, for he is a betrayer of his patrons: the taxpayers.
